CHAMPION - John G. Ghindia, 89, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at his residence.

John was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Niles, the son of John G. and Maria Ghindia Sr.

He was a 1942 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School.

John retired in 1986 from GM Lordstown Fab Plant as a metal assembler after 18 years. From 1989 to 2004, he was the Champion Township Zoning Inspector.

He was a member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, one of the founding members of the American Romanian Orthodox Youth, and the Romanian Orthodox Brotherhood.

John was very active in political and community affairs. He was also one of the founders of the Champion football and basketball boosters club, Champion Athletic Club and Champion Band Boosters.

He is survived by his two sons, Dr. Dennis J. Ghindia of Providence, R.I., and Eugene N. Ghindia of Champion; three grandchildren, Rachael (Daniel) Derr of Cortland, Samantha (Ryan) Amato of Bristolville and Elizabeth "Liz" (Christopher) Monteneri of Champion; and three great-grandchildren, Gunner and Chloe Derr and Addyson Amato.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene Ghindia, whom he married May 17, 1947, and who passed away May 29, 1989; a brother, George Ghindia; and a sister Victoria Fleming.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with a Saracusta service at 7:30 p.m., and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church.

Service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church with the Rev. James Barkett officiating.

Burial will be in Pineview Memorial Park in Warren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, 1936 North Road N.E., Warren, Ohio 44483.
